ABSTRACT The incorrect disposal of contaminated effluents from textile industries is a major contribution to their environmental impact. We aimed to use the chitosan biopolymer from industrial sources as a potential adsorbent agent. The experiments were performed in Jar-Test simulating an industrial scale treatment. Both pH and mass variations were analyzed. Our UV spectra results showed that all datasets fitted to the Langmuir model, indicating the formation of monolayers. Kinetics studies confirmed that adsorption follows a pseudo-second order model, in addition to a chemisorption pattern during adsorption. Kinetics studies also demonstrated intraparticle diffusion, which confirmed a strong adsorbate/adsorbent interaction with the dye. The Jar-Test proved to be an efficient system to simulate treatment of effluents on an industrial scale, thus ranking chitosan powder as a good adsorbent and eligible to future large-scale applications.

Abstract Microorganisms are the primary responsible for food poisoning and food spoilage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate different fruit washing methods with tap water, electrolyzed water and rhamnolipids solution produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa LBI, in order to inhibit microbial growth. The tested organism was Eugenia uniflora. The fruits were washed and periodically inoculated into culture media to evaluate and count the colonies on the fruit surface. It was also observed the deterioration level of the fruits after each treatment. The results showed that treatment with rhamnolipids were the most efficient, inhibiting the growth of fungi and bacteria. The electrolyzed water proved to be very efficient in bacterial inhibition at the initial time, but in the final time it did not present any inhibitory effect. The electrolyzed water was also not effective in eliminating fungus. Washing with tap water was the less efficient treatment of all. The only treatment that showed an increased durability has been with rhamnolipids, increasing shelf life by up to two days. Thus rhamnolipids are the most recommended method for fruits sanitation.

The aim of this work was to compare different toxicity levels of lubricant oils. The tests were performed using the earthworm (Eisenia andrei), arugula seeds (Eruca sativa) and lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa), with three types of contaminants (mineral lubricant oil, synthetic lubricant oil and used lubricant oil) for various biodegradation periods in the soil. The toxicity tests indirectly measured the biodegradation of the contaminants. The samples were analyzed at t0, t60, t120 and t180 days of biodegradation. The used lubricant oil was proved very toxic in all the tests and even after biodegradation its toxicity was high. The mineral and synthetic oils were biodegraded efficiently in the soil although their toxicity did not disappear completely after 180 days.

Água contaminada é uma das maiores origens de doenças em seres humanos. Em todo o mundo, a cloração é o método mais utilizado para promover desinfecção em águas de abastecimento devido ao seu efeito residual, quando adequadamente calculado. Contudo, se a água apresentar matéria orgânica, pode haver a geração de organoclorados, os quais são genotóxicos e carcinogênicos. Sob esta óptica, investigamos o efeito bactericida da aplicação da eletrólise em água sem cloro contaminada com Escherichia coli (CCT-1457). O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o poder de desinfecção e o comportamento cinético da eletrólise realizada em reator de compartimento único e usando eletrodos ADE (Anodo Dimensionalmente Estável), visando ampliação de escala. Uma suspensão contendo elevada concentração de E. coli (10(6) UFC mL-1) foi submetida ao tratamento no reator em 25, 50 e 75 mA cm-2 durante 60 min, em vazões de 200 e 50 Lh-1. A taxa de inativação foi aproximadamente 99% para a solução isenta de compostos clorados, com consumo de energia elétrica menor que 5,60 kWh m-3 em 200 L h-1 e 75 mA cm-2. Uma solução de Na2SO4 0,08M eletrolisada e adicionada posteriormente ao inoculo apresentou efeito residual bactericida. A eficiência da desinfecção foi regida pelo tempo de contato e pela densidade de corrente aplicada, e foi realizado um estudo cinético que permite a ampliação de escala.

The aim of this work was to investigate the disinfectant effect of electrolysis on chlorine-free water, artificially contaminated with Escherichia coli (CCT-1457) and to evaluate the bactericidal activity of electrolysis and kinetic behavior of a single-cell reactor, with a DSA (Dimensionally Stable Anode) electrode to develop a scaled-up system. A high-density E. coli suspension (10(6) CFU mL-1) was electrolyzed in this reactor at 25, 50 and 75 mA cm-2 for up to 60 min, at flow rates of 200 and 500 L h-1. Bacterial survival fell by 98.9% without addition of chlorinated compounds and a power consumption rate not more than 5.60 kWh m-3 at flow rate of 200 L h-1 and 75 mA cm-2. The process produced a germicidal effect that reached this inactivation rate within a relatively short contact time. Also, a solution of electrolyzed 0.08 M Na2SO4 added to the inoculum showed residual bactericidal effect. The efficiency of disinfection was regulated by both the contact time and current density applied, and a kinetic function for the survival rate was developed for the purpose of scaling up.

Avaliação da Biodegradação de Diferentes Tipos de Óleo Lubrificante em Meio Aquoso pela Norma Técnica L6.350 (CETESB, 1990), utiliza-se o processo respirométrico de Bartha e Pramer para acompanhar a biodegradação de diferentes tipos de óleo lubrificante automotivo adaptado ao meio aquoso. Para realização do experimento foram preparados um inóculo base e, posteriormente, um inóculo aquoso. Quatro tratamentos foram realizados em dois experimentos consecutivos: T1 (controle); T2 (óleo semi-sintético); T3 (óleo mineral); T4 (óleo usado). Dentre os resultados, obteve-se a seguinte ordem decrescente na produção de CO2 nos respirômetros: T4 > T2 > T3 > T1. Assim, o óleo lubrificante usado surgiu com maior biodegradabilidade, seguido do semisintético e do óleo mineral. Observou-se também que o lubrificante mineral apresentou maior período de adaptação comparado ao semisintético.

The aim of this work was to study the biodegradation of different types of automotive lubricant oils adapted to the aqueous medium using a base inoculum and an aqueous inoculum. Four treatments were carried out in two consecutive and similar experiments: T1 (control); T2 (half-synthetic oil); T3 (mineral oil); T4 (used oil). The results showed the following decreasing order of CO2 production in the Bartha and Pramer respirometers: T4 > T2 > T3 > T1. Thus, the used lubricant oil showed with highest biodegradability, followed by the half-synthetic one and the mineral oil. It was also observed that the mineral lubricant presented a longer period of adaptation compared to the half-synthetic one.

Meio mineral líquido contendo benzeno (B) ou tolueno (T) ou xileno (X) a 100 mg L-1 e suas misturas de BT, BX e TX (50 + 50 mg L-1 cada mistura) e BTX (33,3 + 33,3 + 33,3 mg L-1 cada mistura) foram utilizados para avaliar a atividade de degradação de B, T e X por Pseudomonas putida CCMI 852 contendo um plasmídeo TOL. Após 18 a 24 horas de homogenização da mistura, o inoculo foi adicionado e o decréscimo da concentração dos solventes foi determinado entre 24 e 25 horas por GC. Pseudomonas putida CCMI 852 foi capaz de metabolizar T e X, mas não B. Na mistura BTX, B não foi metabolizado também e a velocidade de degradação de T e X decresceu cerca de 50% comparado com soluções contendo apenas T ou X.

A minimal liquid medium containing benzene (B), toluene (T) and xylene (X) and mixtures thereof, was used to evaluate degradation activity of Pseudomonas putida CCMI 852 containing a TOL plasmid. Experiments were developed with B, T and X (100 mg L-1), with mixtures of BT, BX, and TX (50 + 50 mg L-1 each) and BTX (33.3 + 33.3 + 33.3 mg L-1 each), added to 500 mL of medium. After 18 to 24 hours, the inoculum was added and solvent disappearance was determined after 24 to 25 hours by GC. Results showed that P. putida CCMI 852 was able to metabolize T and X, but B was not metabolized. In a BTX mixture, B was not metabolized and T and X degradation rate decreased 50%.

O efluente de uma indústria produtora de antioxidante e antiozonante para borracha, caracterizado por alta concentração de matéria orgânica e aminas aromáticas que são poluentes e tóxicos, foi tratado através do processo eletrolítico de forma a melhorar as condições para a biodegradabilidade de seus resíduos persistentes. A avaliação da velocidade de estabilização dos efluentes eletrolisados e não eletrolisado, em meio líquido, biodegradação, sob a ação de bactérias, foi utilizado o respirômetro de Bartha and Pramer. A aferição da biodegradabilidade dos efluentes, após os diferentes tempos de eletrólise, permitiu determinar o tempo ótimo de exposição à eletrólise. Os tempos de eletrólise que permitiram uma maior degradação da matéria orgânica foram de 10 min e 25 min. Pode-se concluir que o tratamento eletrolítico é um método viável para a diminuição do tempo de adaptação dos microrganismos ao efluente e conseqüentemente acelerar a biodegradação do efluente da indústria química.

The effluent of a rubber chemical antioxidant and antiozonant producer industry, with high content of organic material was subjected to electrolytic process. To evaluate the speed of stabilization of the eletroctrolyzed effluents, and to evaluate the biodegradation the respirometric test of Bartha and Pramer was used. The monitoring of the biodegradation of the effluent, after different periods of electrolysis show that the ideal time of electrolysis was 10 and 25 min. It was concluded that the eletrolytic process was viable to diminish the adaptation time of the microorganism to the effluent and consequently increased the biodegradation of effluent.

O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados dos tratamentos eletrolíticos (05; 15; 30; 45 e 60 min) no efluente simulado com o composto Flexzone 3P, utilizando-se eletrodos de Ti/TiRuO2, sob 0,025 A cm-2. Após as eletrólises, foram feitas análises de pH, condutividade, espectrofotometria no UV-vis, análise por cromatografia gasosa, ensaios de toxicidade utilizando Saccharomyces cerevisiae e ensaio de respirometria de Bartha. O pH dos efluentes foi diminuindo à medida que aumentou- se o tempo de eletrólise, ao contrário da condutividade, a qual apresentou pequeno aumento. Verificou-se que após 60 min de tratamento foi obtida diminuição da concentração do composto Flexzone 3P em 65,1%. Analisando-se os espectros de UV-vis e cromatogramas do efluente após realização do tratamento eletrolítico, concluiu-se que ocorreram oxidações e transformações de funções orgânicas do composto, durante os tratamentos. Após a realização do tratamento eletrolítico, o efluente simulado apresentou diminuição da toxicidade a S. cerevisiae, após 5 min de eletrólise. O tempo de eletrólise de 5 min foi o que apresentou melhor resultado de biodegradação do que os demais períodos de tratamento, no ensaio de respirometria para o efluente com o composto Flexzone 3P.

This study investigated the effects of the electrolytic treatment in the simulated wastewater with aromatic amine n-phenyl-n-isopropyl-p-phenylenediamine (Flexzone 3P®) using Ti/TiRuO2 electrodes under 0.025 A/cm² (DC) for different electrolysis durations (5; 15; 30; 45 and 60 min). Conductivity, pH, UV-visible spectra, gas chromatograms, toxicity and biodegradation tests were carried out. During the electrolytic treatment the pH decreased and conductivity increased slightly. After 60 min of electrolysis, the concentration of Flexzone 3P decreased by 65.1%. UV-vis spectra and chromatograms of simulated wastewater showed changes in the molecular structure of the aromatic amine. After 5 and 15 min of electrolysis, the simulated wastewater containing the Flexzone 3P showed detoxification by Saccharomyces cerevisiae toxicity test. The electrolysis of 5 min improved the biodegradation of the simulated wastewater containing Flexzone 3P.
